Clara Hughes and Svein Tuft are the new queen and the king of Canadian Cycling
Clara Hughes and Svein Tuft win the Canadian National Championships during the 39 kilometre Time Trial events.
Clara Hughes of Team Specialized-Lululemon was the fastest Canadian women after her splendid performance at the 39 kilometre race.
She completed the race in a quickest time of 39 minutes and 42 seconds and occupied the top podium spot.
Rhae-Christie Shaw of Team Exergy Twenty12 fell 1 minute and 40 seconds short and secured the second spot.
Julie Beveridge of Team Equipe Vienne Futuroscope, Jasmin Glaesser of Team Cycling BC and Joelle Numainville of Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies claimed the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
On the other hand, Svein Tuft of Team Orica GreenEdge succeeded at the Under 23 and the Elite Men event.
He completed the event in an impressive time of 47 minutes and 26 seconds and restricted his major opponents.
Tuft successfully defended his title for the fifth consecutive time which was also his career’s eighth victory at the Canadian National Championships.
“I wanted to defend the title, of course, but for me, my approach and the way I ride are more important to me than the result," he noted.
"I'm not interested in only having a good ride today. I'm looking down the road at the World Time Trial Championships”.
“It's a huge goal for the team, and I want to contribute to us having a good crack at it there. Every time I'm on the time trial bike, it's in preparation for that end of the season goal".
Christian Meier of Team Orica GreenEdge fell 2 minutes and 8 seconds short and occupied the second spot with Hugo Houle of Team Spidertech C10 securing the third position.
Aaron Fillion of Team Ride With Rendall, Francois Parisien and Zach Bell of Team Spidertech and Rob Bitton of Team H&R claimed fourth, the fifth, the sixth, the seventh and the eighth position.
Christian Meier appreciated Svein’s stunning performance and noted that, "Svein was a real ripper out there".
The 106.8 kilometre Canadian Elite Women-Road Race and 180.2 kilometre Canadian Elite/U23 Men-Road Race are scheduled on June 23 and June 24th respectively.
