Clara Hughes books her berth at the 2011 UCI Road World Championships – Cycling news
The multiple time Olympic medallist for many sports, Clara Hughes has now put her foot forth for Cycling with a singular aim- to win gold at the 2012 London Olympics.
The 38-year-old Canadian athlete Clara Hughes evidently knew that it would be hard to cope up with everything. “There is no more of both as an option,” Hughes stated recently on her blog.
Keeping in view that there is only a one-day gap between the Road race, the Time trial and the Team pursuit, Hughes recently has decided to go for the Time trial.
There was immense pressure with the Olympics just around the corner, but she proved her choice to be the right one winning the gold on Friday at the UCI Pan-American Championships in Medellin, Columbia in her chosen form of road race.
After winning the stage, she was really happy with the result and was also grateful towards the national team who gave her a chance.
She covered the distance of 24.2 kilometres in 25 minutes and 59 seconds. The victory conveniently dusted off all other contenders with Evelyn Stevens of America finishing second 28 seconds behind.
Hughes said, “I was up against two of the best racers in the world (the two Americans) and to come out on top is extremely satisfying and a good indication of my potential in the time trial. Now I have time to train for the event and
I can’t wait to put in the work to get stronger.”
With the gold, Hughes has now earned a place at the international cycling event in Denmark in September 2011 and a guaranteed spot on her national world championship team.
The Winnipeg based cyclist Hughes holds four speed skating medals including a gold over three Winter Olympics. Her cycling honours include Bronze in the Road and the Time trial 15 years back at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
“Everything I do in the coming months will be to bring my best to the start line in Denmark and see how I fare against the best racers in the world,” concluded Hughes with high aims for her Cycling Time trial career ahead.
