Watson is currently struggling to get himself fit for international cricket, with the all-rounder being ruled out of the second consecutive Test due to a calf-strain, which occurred earlier this month. The 31-year-old cricketer is considered to be one of
the finest all-rounders of world-cricket these days and his absence has been a huge setback for the home team, in their pursuit of regaining the world’s number one Test ranking once again.
There are some media reports that Watson wants to play in the team as a specialist batsman but the team management and Clarke are not ready to assure him a place in the playing-11, if the Queenslander is not able to bowl. The whole situation, according to
some, has created a rift between the skipper and the vice-captain, eventually hampering the team’s morale during a series of extreme importance.
The New South Welshman however, has dismissed all these speculations and made it clear that he goes along very nicely with Watson, who in Clarke’s opinion is an integral part of the Baggy Greens.
“We have a great relationship firstly, I know there's been talk of that being a bit different, but Watto and I, our friendship and our professional relationship when it comes to captain and vice-captain is as close as I can certainly
ask for,” Clarke said.
The Aussie captain further added that Watson understands his role in the team as he has the potential to deliver the goods with both bat and ball. The middle-order batsman hopes that the vice-captain will be fit for the third Test of
the series, which begins from November 30, at Perth.
He mentioned, “Watto sees himself as an all-rounder, he wants to be an all-rounder. He knows the impact he has in this game with both bat and ball. Our plans are to try to get him to 100% as quick as we can, knowing we've got eight
days now before the third Test in Perth.”
