It can’t have helped, but Cricket Australia’s general manager of cricket Michael Brown wouldn’t be drawn on it at the press conference for the announcement of the Australia Test squad to tour New Zealand, saying: “He's the vice-captain and he'll continue to be vice-captain into the future”.
