West Brom manager Steve Clarke was surprised by last night’s lacklustre performance in the 3-1 defeat against Swansea City in the Premier League.
After a terrific run of games in the league, West Brom suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat at the hands of Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium last night.
The Baggies had been dealt a double defeat by the Swans last season, and were looking to avenge them this term. Captain http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chris-c9006 Brunt had especially said before the game that he was looking to ‘settle scores’ against the Swans and was targeting a win at their
turf.
However, Swansea managed a fairly comfortable win over West Brom, scoring goals through Michu and Wayne Routledge. West Brom managed to get a consolation through http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Romelu-Lukaku-c31672, but failed to give a solid account of themselves.
A win last night would’ve secured 5 successive top flight wins for the Baggies for the first time in over 34 years, and would have given them a 3 point lead over Chelsea in 3rd place. However, the defeat moves them down to 4th, level
on points with Chelsea but behind on goal difference.
Manager Steve Clarke was surprised to see his side lose in the manner they did, especially after a run of impressive games in the league. West Brom had managed victories over Southampton, Wigan Athletic, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and Sunderland prior to last night’s game,
and were favourites going into the Swansea clash.
Clarke admits that his team struggled to keep up with Swansea and said:
“That was very unexpected. We started so slowly it was incredible, you wouldn’t believe it. We know Swansea are a fantastic team and they play good football and we knew they would cause us problems.”
“But I did not expect so many problems so early and when you are chasing the game it is going to be difficult. We have had a really good season, played really well. We came into the game confident, with more or less the same players and system, but that’s
football, it happens.”
West Brom host Stoke City at the Hawthorns next week. Stoke City pose a tough and physical challenge for the Baggies, and Clarke knows his team will have to step it up if they wish to keep their momentum running.
