http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Queensland-c834. While his batting remains a threat, the Kangaroos are keen to utilize his all-round prowess, which gives them a cutting edge against their opponents.
However, his troublesome injury history has raised doubts over his ability to provide the side with both, bat and ball. He already missed the entire Test summer against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 last year after sustaining a calf strain during the team’s preceding trip to South Africa. Having suffered similar woes this term, a possibility of him playing as a top six batter was considered but after assessment, it was decided that he will take no part in the first home Test against the Proteas, and will duly work on his fitness.
His replacement is http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rob-Quiney-c2340, a Victorian batsman, who recently impressed the selectors with his temperament during the only warm-up game against the tourists. The left-hander scored 85 and an unbeaten 11 in the match, and got the nod ahead of Phil Hughes and a host of all-rounders.
While http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 admitted that Watson’s all-round ability will be missed, he was clear that using him as an out and out batsman does not suit the team. Watson, 31, has also reiterated his desire to continue bowling.
"We'll worry about that if we have to. Shane sees himself as an allrounder. I haven't heard any different at this stage," Clarke said in Brisbane ahead of the first Test. "I'm pretty sure he wants to come back as an allrounder and we've selected him through his career as an allrounder.
"There have been games where he hasn't been selected because he hasn't been able to bowl. If he's fit to do both, then he'll do both. If he's not, the selectors will sit down and work out if we're going to select him just as a batsman."
