Has the growth of individualism brought an end to stable socila identities?

I'm writing an essay on class identity for sociology. and i need help on how to structure it? can anyone help? i'm not sure what theories to focus on.

also just out of interest what are your thoughts on the idea that class is no longer an issue in th Uk?

  1. No, I don't believe that class identity is declining at all. Less people may choose to talk about it openly, but it's still there in the brain. This is human nature: you tend to associate with people more yourself.

    There may be a lack of "caste" now, but the invisible line still divides the upper class from the middle, and the middle from the lower. Some people choose to deny this, but we all know it's true.

    You can structure your essay like this:

    - intro = interesting story about how a poor girl and a rich guy can't get along...

    - your opponent's view points

    - your view points

    - the theory (which I assume either conflicts with your values or support it)

    - summarize the points

  2. Um. Thinking out loud: Yes, Class identity is declining. It used to be that class was nearly synonymous with wealth. The kid whose parents owned the castle was upperclass, then tradesmen, then surfs; but it was hard to go up in class. I guess second and third sons and their wives went down to a trade.

    But now: real lowclass (in the sense of newly wealthy working class people) can become very wealthy and get into higher classes much faster.
