  1. I prefer a gift card then trying to pull out of them what they want.  Let them get what they want when they see it on the shelf.

  2. I don't know how much you want to spend, but my son just got a set of 4 space hoppers for his birthday. Enough for he & my 9 year old daughter plus a couple of firends and they are outside with them All the time! I think it's a quite traditional gift, and not something that will gather dust!

  3. Nine year old girls like crafty things - bead kits, gilt scratch pictures, felt collage kits.  Try the craft section of your local toy shop, or the childrens section of your local craft shop!

  4. if you have to mail it then go for a gift voucher. Normally I wouldn't suggest them as I think they are impersonal but when you have to mail it the price gets bigger but if that does not matter...

    Art kit

    craft kit

    tamagotchi

PS2 game (if she has one)

    clothes

movie tickets (my kids just got these for their 9th birthday and it was great)

if she supports a team , clothing, mascot etc.

if she collects something add to it (for my kids it is beanie kids and erasers for my daughter)

    an assortment of nick nacks...pencils/hair ties/nail polish/etc.

scrap booking album (this opens up to you sending other stuff for birthdays for scrap booking)

girly mosquito net for over bed (my daughter loves hers)

    MP3 player

    C.D's

Don't necessarily think Bratz or Barbie. My daughter has never been into them

  5. I have an 8 year old daughter myself.  I agree that crafty stuff is always good.  My daughter got a pack of Sculpey Clay with the instruction booklet and she loves it.  They form the clay and cook it in the oven and have their own hardened creation.

She loves games too, like Uno & board games.

Books are good gifts... she is reading a fairy series right now.

she also loves outdoor stuff so she always gets new soccer balls and stuff for presents and she loves that.

She likes clothing and shoes and accessories.

Kids that age really like doing stuff...what about getting her a little wallet or purse and then stocking it with fun stuff to do.  Like a gift certificate to her local chain of movie theaters (look up online and buy from website), bowling alley, skate rink, ice cream shop, zoo, whatever is in her area.  I did this for my step daughter to be...on a budget scale...gave her wallet with zoo passes and a gift card to local favorite restaurant near the zoo and told her to take her mom out for fun date.

  6. All 8 year old girls love jewellery, maybe a nice necklace with her initial on it, or a pretty bracelet.  8 year olds want to be like their mums so you can't go wrong with jewellery.

  7. Get her a new bike.

  8. send a gift card or something hannah montana

  9. My 8 yr old likes stuff for her room. Crafts are good. I think most girls that age loves Hannah Montana. Brush and comb sets. Care box filled with bath soaps, shampoos, lotions. Play make up, or my daughter plays with the real stuff. Cheap jewelry.

  10. sparkly pencil case or bag

    arty crafty stuff

    hair stuff

    book

  11. Something cool to decorate her room from Claire`s or Icing or even Target.

Books that are classics and she is almost guaranteed not to have:

A Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson

    Yolanda`s Genius by Carol Fenner

Island of Blue Dolphins by Scott O Dell (you could give this one with a dolphin necklace -- almost a guaranteed hit)

The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi

The Egypt Game by Zilpha Snyder -- also could be a theme with some Egyptian/African type accessories

Kate DiCamillo -- Because of Winn Dixie, Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, The Tale of Despereaux

Not sure about the book thing?

    Crystal Growing kit

    Twirled Paper Kit

Digital camera -- she can make photo stickers etc.

This is The Daring Book for Girls which has all kinds of tricks and card games and other cool things to know how to do.

The first part lists the things a daring girl should have -- bandanna; deck of cards; rubber bands -- things like that. You could put together a gift with the book and the supplies.

None of it is naughty -- all fun stuff a girl can do that is not plugged into a screen.

A craft set she can do herself (mothers are often too busy to sit and do the harder ones along with the kid)

  12. Witht all of this crazy stuff going on with teenagers nowaday

how about tkeeping her on track with her education...!

Get her some school supplies.Trust me, she will thank you letter because that will show that you really care about her future.

She doesnt have to get a toy or something for every birthday

  13. You don't say whether you know her hobbies (dancing or horse-riding etc) or what sort of budget.

How about adopting a wild animal certificate? My daughter (10) also had one of those and loved following 'her' Elephant for a year... there are a number of choices on the Born Free site - who knows, you might start a passion in her for protecting a species!

A long distance friend chose to give my daughter a special collectable ornament from a range as a Christening present - it was the Royal Albert range of Beatrix Potter. Now, every birthday and Christmas she sends another one to add to her collection. My daughter has loved everyone and they do not become out of date just because someone grows up - if you stay in contact with this little girl you are going to be buying gifts for quite a few years yet as well as possibly something for doing well in special exams or driving test etc.

Here are some links for some collectables, which do mail well (the Beatrix Potter is always fine through the mail wrapped in bubble wrap):

  15. what about a charm braclet or a nice necklace or a voucher for a shop

  16. She would love some cute jewelry and a mini handbag, or maybe an iTunes giftcard.  With Hannah Montana's music, many nine-year-olds would be thrilled be this gift.

  17. Roller Skates? WH Smith token, she can choose a book, dvd,etc herself.
