  1. Hey Jane V

Because you are classically trained won't change anything in the style of music you love.Everyone thinks Cristina Aquilera is classically tained b-cuz she sings over 5 octave but NO.

She doesn't have to sing classic because she is a soprano. Mariah Carey as well. she can sing higher than Aquilera and sings ballads and wat not.

You sing what your heart urges you to do. It's not because I play classic gitar that i can't play jazz or rock. Contrary. I use the finger stype picinfor fast leads which is helpful technique-wise.

  2. I have taught voice since 1971.  First, women do not HAVE a falsetto.  Only men.  I think that the previous poster meant *head voice*.  And yo have a teacher who is training you classically, and says that you should be singing power ballads!  I cannot reconcile those two concepts coming from the same teacher - and to someone you age and stage of education.

You want to learn to sing so that you are successful for a LONG TIME>  This means having a good technique - a foundation that will allow you to do whatever you wish.  Yes, you can be able to *turn in on and off* and sing an art song, an aria, and a pop song.  However, the screaming, wailing, and posturing that is considered a part of pop singing is often injurious to your voice.  I had a student this year who was CONVINCED that she could learn to belt correctly - at age 13.  There are also kids that age who play baseball, and wonder why their coach will not let them throw curveballs in a game.  A *qualified* teaher will know what you should be singing when - no matter how much you WANT to do something wild.

Every day, there are dozens of little kid wannabes who write in to YA, asking about how to find an agent, "'cuz I wanna be, like, famous, like kinda Miley Cyrus!"  Gag me.  YOU appear to be doing the right thing - taking lessons!  Make sure that your vocal teacher is HIGHLY qualified - at LEAST a degree in music.  Anyone who says "degrees do not matter" either does not HAVE one, or has one from a poor college.

I wish you much luck - yes, you should be able - in time - to be able to sing in a variety of styles.  What is important NOW is that you learn fundamenally good vocal technique.

  3. The reason it's so hard to sing pop songs after classical training is because they teach you not to strain your voice.  In classical singing, the upper notes are almost always sang in falsetto, to prevent cracking or injuring your vocal cords.  I had the same problem.  I was classically trained from the beggining, when I was 12.  I'm 23 now, and I'm just now able to sing in a 'pop' voice.  Pop singing teaches you the exact opposite, that you should push it and people very often hurt themselves.  Classical singing will teach you the right way to do it, and the result is beautiful, but you won't sound like Britney Spears.  You'll also probably hate pop music when you're done.  You'll hear intonation that you didn't notice before.  Britney Spears to me is like nails on a chalkboard.

And a high c is a hard note to hit, because it's usually right on a break between head voice and falsetto.  I was always a lyric soprano, and it's hard to transition from that to a mezzo soprano.  A lot of training (and maybe different teachers) can teach you both styles.

  4. No it's not true, even people who have been trained in opera can sing a love ballad without using their opera vocals.....classically trained people learn how to use their voice the correct way, breathing, using their diaphragm correctly, etc, but this doesn't mean that they can't sing different styles, they just know how to do it correctly !!!!!!!!!!!

  5. nah thats bullshit.  one of my best friends was classically trained as an opera singer until 14 from birth pretty much, and now she sings in metal bands and can sing pretty much all kinds of music.  if anything the classical training helped her.
