  2. Okay, this is a complicated one.

    deaf = someone with a severe or profound hearing loss

    Deaf = someone who is a member of the Deaf community, could be someone who is hard of hearing, or someone who is deaf.

    hearing impaired and hearing disabled are words that the Deaf community does not like. it makes the foundation of their culture sound like a problem, and to them it is not.

    hard of hearing is the Deaf accepted way of classifying anyone who has a hearing loss, anywhere from mild to moderately severe, without being classified deaf.

    the Deaf Community.

    Hearing Impaired: Politically incorrect. Outdated terminology. Medical viewpoint.

    Hard of Hearing-Minor-Moderate-Severe: Hearing loss in the low or high frequencies. Able to hear some and communicate with hearing people. With or without hearing aids.

    Hearing Disabled: Disability includes hearing loss.

    Deaf with a capital D is those who are culturally deaf.

    Hearing impaired is a lack of hearing, but may not be profoundly deaf. In Deaf culture it's not an impairment. Someone is just hard of hearing.
