Claude Giroux signs 3-year extension with the Philadelphia Flyers
Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux signed a deal on Monday, 8 November that will keep him with the team for another three years, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced.
Giroux was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1 and both he and the Flyers can now avoid the headaches of working out a deal or worrying about offers from other teams. The deal is said to be
worth $11.25 million over the three-year term.
"I'm really excited to be with the Flyers organization for three more years," Giroux told the media. "We are going to a very good team, hopefully for many years. This is a good group of guys and I am having
a lot of fun right now."
"He's a good two-way player for us now," Holmgren said of Giroux during a conference call. "He's seeing considerable ice time and he not only plays not on our power play, but shorthanded situations and
for a young player coming into the league at the age he did, that says something. He's good defensively and coaches in the NHL won't put up with young players who aren't responsible defensively. The fact Claude is killing penalties right now shows what a good
young player he is."
Giroux is still only 22 years old and already in his fourth season with the Flyers. Giroux broke out during last season's play-offs scoring 10 goals, and 21 points, helping lead the Flyers to the Stanley
Cup final.
Giroux has had an excellent start to this season and is averaging almost a point per game. He has also been excellent killing penalties and has scored three shorthanded goals.
"He's somebody we count on to play in every situation and he's proving himself to be a clutch player," Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette said of Giroux after the announcement was made. "He's had big games
in playoffs and big games when you need a performance out of somebody. He seems to be stepping up."
