The Nerazzurri head coach was visibly dejected after the loss to Marseille, but was left ruing the fact that the best his team could do was not enough to qualify.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan required a two-goal win to pull off an aggregate victory in the second-leg of their UEFA Champions League tie against Marseille, and they were nearly there.
However, it was a case of “so close, yet so far” for the Milanese giants. The coach exclaims that the result over the course of the two matches “sums up our season, but the lads could not have given any more.”
A progression into the last eight of the Champions League would have made it four consecutive appearances in the quarter-finals for the San Siro outfit, but this was not meant to be, as they crashed out courtesy
the away goal rule.
“I think in 180 minutes we allowed three shots on target, but the team that scores goals is the one that wins, so compliments to Marseille.”
The manager conceded that his side were hard done by the defeat as they had given their all to the Beneamata cause. He reflected on the tactical changes he made to the side, bemoaning the injury to Wesley
Sneijder which forced him to substitute the Dutchman in the 57th minute.
Didier Deschamps’ men continued most of their attacks from the left wing, and were at the attacking best from the left midfield, which caused trouble for the Inter side. Claudio Ranieri’s side were extremely
defensive and were able to muster up only few moves for their attacking duo. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Diego-c11058 Milito and Diego Forlan did not have many chances from which to score.
Comparing the two legs of the tie to their entire season, Ranieri said:
“There was a little drop in concentration levels in injury time. When a season goes this badly, there is a bit of everything in the soup of causes. This two-legged affair summed up the entire campaign.”
Inter will now be turn their attentions to their Serie A prospects and will hope that this run of victories can be turned into a streak of wins, leading them to late charge for the last Champions League place.
