Clay Guida to collide with Gray Maynard in a non-title bout on UFC on FX 4 – UFC News
Clay Guida, the former Strikeforce lightweight champion, is looking forward to seal his place as the number one UFC lightweight contender by knocking out Gray Maynard, his upcoming opponent, in an explosive non-title bout to be held on June 22, 2012.
The duo will headline ‘UFC on FX 4’ fight card which will be televised live from Revel Casino situated in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The showdown will be co-headlined by another lightweight non-title bout between Sam Stout and Spencer Fisher.
This will be the fourth Ultimate Fighting Championship episode which will be presented live on FX channel. The pay-per-view will also have a preliminary card which will be televised on Fuel TV.
Clay recently gave a detailed interview and put forth his opinion about the upcoming clash with Gray. Guida though is a heavily experienced belligerent in UFC’s lightweight division yet resides at the seventh spot in the official rankings.
Also known as ‘The Carpenter’, Clay has been in a total of 41 bouts. The 30-year-old is a lethal submission specialist who has collected most of his wins, 15 to be specific, by making the opponent submit.
Out of a total of 29 mixed martial art wins, Clay has nailed just four opponents by knockout and nine by either split or unanimous decision. While explaining his view point and somewhat future ambition, Clay commented that he also again wants to make a comeback
in the title contention scenario.
Guida was of the view that the best thing to do in order to enter the limelight again is to collect a win over Gray who proudly resides within the top five rankings. Clay stated, “Finishing Gray Maynard puts me right back to being the No. 1 contender. It
puts me right there. Gray Maynard hadn’t lost in two or three years. But a finish over Gray is what I’m looking for.”
Clay moved on and further added that the lightweight division is most probably the heavily stacked division in the whole of UFC as there are four to five brawlers who are just an inch away from becoming the number one contender.
The multiple-time ‘submission of the night’ winner, Clay stated, “The lightweight division is so stacked right now, I think it is safe to say I’ve got to knock Gray out to get a title shot. There’s five or six guys right now at 155 pounds who are all one
big punch or one big kick from being the No. 1 contender. Winning isn’t enough for any of us.”
The bout will be a tough one as Gray also has almost the same agenda in his mind and will not let Clay secure the number one spot easily.
