Clay Zavada disappointed after the game against Arizona Diamondbacks
The Cincinnati Reds non-roster reliever Clay Zavada on Monday, March 19, expressed his disappointment with the performance he showed against the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Playing against the D-backs, the reliever gave up six runs in the three hits that he allowed,
having had three walks.
Interestingly, Zavada, at one point in time, actually represented the Diamondbacks against whom his Sunday’s performance was not up to the mark.
"I'm disappointed," said Zavada. "I wanted to pitch well against the Diamondbacks and I did not. I've got to own that. That game is on me. I lost it for our team against my old team."
Becoming the D-backs’ Draft pick back in 2006, the reliever was expected to achieve new heights with his competitive spirits. However, he was out of the game after his father died of a heart attack as he moved on to look after his family.
He remained away from the game, but returned back. He tried to prove his efficacy in the Minor Leagues, and there came a time when he got back to the D-backs in 2009. That year, his performance was good enough with 3.35 ERA in the 49 games that he played.
2010 did not prove a very good year for the pitcher as he underwent Tommy John surgery. This once again took him away from the game, and when he was back in 2011, the Arizona Diamondbacks did not retain him.
Although his Monday’s performance might have been very disappointing, he nonetheless looks forward to this year. He thinks he has a fighting chance to prevail.
"Last year, I didn't have the opportunity to fight for a job because of my surgery," Zavada said. "This year, I have a fighting chance, which feels good. If you can't fight, they'll bury you. You have to scratch and claw every day. That's how I've always
worked -- scratching, clawing and fighting every day.”
Although he wants to regain his momentum, he so far has 10.80 ERA in the five games that he has played. If he somehow wants to make his way into the club’s bullpen, Zavada has to improve.
