Clayton Mortensen shines as Colorado Rockies humiliate San Diego Padres 3-0 – MLB Update
Colorado Rockies’ starter, Clayton Mortensen did an outstanding job with the ball as he pitched six shut-out innings with an ERA of 3.20 in the Rockies’ 3-0 victory against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, San Diego on June 6.
The Rockies led off the three-game series 1-0 with a convincing victory.
During the first inning, the Rockies opened their scoring account by posting a single run and got a 1-0 lead. Troy Tulowitzki reached to short-stop position on an infield single and Chris Nelson posted one run for the Rockies.
The pitchers threw extremely well from the second to eighth inning as they pitched score-less innings during this span. The batters wanted to direct their shots towards the gaps but failed to achieve that target and were unable to put any run for their teams.
In the eighth inning, the Padres’ batters missed some scoring opportunities in front of the pitches thrown by Mortensen as Jason Bartlett was struck-out swinging and Aaron Cunningham got out at second base. Mortensen pitched superbly as he gave no run on
five hits and struck-out three batters, as he gave only two walks on 88 pitches.
Mortensen commented on the game and said, “I sure hope so. It definitely wasn't pretty. But to be able to keep them at zero runs and keep that one run lead was big. It worked out really nice.”
The Rockies’ manager Jim Tracy had a huge ovation for Mortensen as he said, “A great pitching performance by our entire staff. I thought Clayton Mortensen actually got better as he went along. The location of his pitches improved as he got into the game.”
The relievers also performed well for the Rockies as they went score-less in their combined three inning pitches. Huston Street threw the last inning for his 16th save and struck-out two batters.
Seth Smith tripled to deep centre-field and Ty Wigginton scored a single run. The last run for the Rockies was taken by Smith on the single-run shot of Chris Iannetta to left centre-field and extended his team’s lead 3-0 to end the game.
The Padres’ starter, Clayton Richard threw well but not enough to steal a win for his team. He pitched seven innings with an ERA of 4.20 and gave just one run on five hits including one earned run.
