Clayton Richard shines as San Diego Padres overpower Arizona Diamondbacks 8-4 – MLB Update
San Diego Padres’ starter, Clayton Richard had a notable day with the ball as he threw five solid innings and struck out five batters in the Padres’ 8-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field, Arizona, on May 16.
Richard allowed three runs on five hits including three earned runs and three walks. He said of the game, “It's a lot of fun watching those guys play, being excited and swinging the bat so well.”
The Padres opened their scoring account in the first inning and led off with 2-0 when Ryan Ludwick had a sacrifice fly and Cameron Maybin completed his run-scoring single off the left-field. Chase Headley hit an RBI single and Jason Bartlett made two-run
double on the errors of the Diamondbacks’ fielders, Drew Stubbs and Ryan Roberts. The Padres extended their lead to 5-0 at the end of second inning.
Henry Blanco hit a solo homer during third inning and reduced the trail of the Diamondbacks, 5-1. No score was added in the fourth inning as the pitchers threw the ball in good line and length. The Padres added three runs while the Diamondbacks took two
runs in the fifth inning to move the score-card, 8-3. Ludwick struck a one-run homer for the Padres and Jason Bartlett doubled towards the left-field area.
Juan Miranda singled on the sacrifice bunt of Roberts while Blanco hit a home run during the fifth inning for the Diamondbacks. Both teams went score-less in the sixth and seventh inning. Justin Upton drove a high shot towards the right-centre field which
resulted in a one-run homer for the Diamondbacks and they cut-off their deficit to 8-4. In the ninth inning, the batters were unable to post even a single run.
The Diamondbacks’ Manager Kirk Gibson was disappointed after the continuous seventh inning loss in last 10 games. Speaking to reporters, he said, “He didn't pitch very well at all. He didn't set a very good tone for us. He really didn't have much tonight
at all, no location. I think we will reevaluate.”
Armando Galarraga was frustrated with his performance right through in five inning pitches. He allowed eight runs on eight hits including five earned runs. Galarraga gave away two walks and struck out only one batter. During the press conference, he was
very aggressive as he said, “What are you talking about the next start? Who you say I am going to be worried about my next start? I am frustrated about this start, not the next one."
The relievers performed really well for the Diamondbacks in combined four inning pitches as they permitted no run. They gave away just one walk and one hit.
