I'm moving to Nassau County, Long Island for a job, and I'm looking to rent a single person apartment. What would be the safest, nicest looking area to live in?

  1. Not Freeport.  Not Hempstead or New Cassel.  Not Amityville. Not North Valley Stream.  Not South Floral Park and Elmont.  Not parts of Long Beach.  Forget North Baldwin and West Hempstead.  Don't even drive through Uniondale. And unless you wear a sari, forget New Hyde Park.   If your name ends with a vowel move to Massapequa.  If you have a trust fund, then anywhere between Great Neck and Syosset is yours.  If you come from old money try Garden City.  If you like gefilte fish, Merrick or Bellmore is the place to be.  Close in to NYC is the Five Towns area.  Except Inwood.

Oceanside, Baldwin Harbor, Island Park, or East Rockaway are close in and nice.

  2. Mike G is wrong in a lot of ways.

South Shore is affordable and safe(I dont think Long Island is a dangerous place for the most part)

Seaford,Masapequa.Farmingdale, Bethpage, Wantagh,Bellmore are all good places that you should be able to find a rental in easily.

  3. Mike G is outrageously wrong. He basically just named all the towns that have blacks & hispanics

You have no kids, so living in a town like Freeport actually might be best for you. The Southern part of freeport has a vibrant waterfront with tons of bars and restaurants, and there are apartments for very affordable prices, and ethnically its very mixed, with even amounts of whites, blacks and latinos. In fact, Newsday rated it as one of the most affordable places to live for young couples, and it would be worth a look. Some parts are rough tho, mainly the area near roosevelt.
