Question:

Cleaning mold from under edging of shower door?

We have glass shower doors that have quite a mold issue. The mold has formed underneath the 1 mm clear vinyl/ plastic seal that surrounds the metal frame of the door touching the glass. I have tried a toothbrush but it's too large and I've tried getting a metal nail file under there but I realized I was breaking the seal. Can this be cleaned or will I somehow need to remove the seal and replace it. If so, what is the procedure to do that? Thanks for any help because this problem is getting very unsightly. Now I"ll know to use my Tilex mold cleaner more often.

  2. As you indicated, you may have to remove the seal to get at the mold that has accumulated there. Try using some gel bleach, or some plain vinegar & baking soda (Green Alternative) with small bristle bottle cleaners or those tiny dental bristle flossers (can be found a major drugstore chains) as you clean the mold out. If the area is really tight, try also using the edge of sandpaper with your cleaning solution to scrub the mold out of the area.

Your ideal of using the clear caulk sounds good, but check to see which one (silicone?) can stand up to moisture and extreme temperatures. The area will have to completely be clean and dry before you apply it. Blow drying the area may help.  Remember that after applying it, you will have to wait a while before showering.  I once saw an advertisement of a guard that helped but do not remember the site.

However just to cover yourself, I advise you to first check online with the shower door manufacturer, or at Home Depot or Lowes, regarding your brand of shower doors as to replacing the seal and dealing with that type of problem. They will probably indicate that a bathroom ventilation fan will eliminate that problem also.  But if that is not in the budget right now, you may have to demand of the family to open windows during the warmer months, or use a fan, and definitely to wipe/dry that area to prevent water/moisture sitting in the area after showering. Hope it helps......

  3. Similar problem.

Had 2 new shower enclosures  put in .

One installer told me that mold will form under the  clear caulking so he

cleans the tile w/ bleach before he puts the doors in to hold it off .

Also tipped me off to mold killers from marine supply stores.

    Best regards
