Question:

Cleaning my university dorm?

I just got to my dorm today and I want to make sure it is all cleaned before I can get comfortable. The room is carpeted so how do I go about cleaning the carpet? What do I need to make sure it will be completely clean? And then what about the desks and cupboards (made of wood)...what can I do to clean those? Thanks in advance =]

  1. First, get a nice hot bucket of LYSOL or some other disinfectant and wipe down your walls, mattresses, and any plastic surfaces, including window sills.

Febreeze makes a dusting polish now that not only will clean your wood, but keep it smelling fresh.

Finally, your carpet.  You might want to ask your RA if the dorms were fumigated over the summer.  If so, a good vacuuming, and some febreeze will suffice.  However, if your college has a history of bed bugs, like my daughter's did, you will want to spray some sort of insecticide on the floor, then vacuum.  Make sure you have a lot of ventilation, and don't have any food sitting out.

When you are all done, walk out backwards, covering every surface with Lysol spray disinfectant, being careful not to breathe it in.  Wait a bit, then you will be ready for a healthy year!
