Hi there,

Only located a lot of silver cutlery years old, and some of it has discoloured.

Any suggestions for home cleaning?

Thanks

  1. You could try a silver cleaning cloth, probably available at your nearest jewellers.

    H Samuel for one.

  2. I work in a restaurant and we just use vinegar and boiling hot water then polish with a clean tea towel

    Hope it helps :)

  3. I prefer Wright's silver cream over other products I've tried, because it works and it's gentler on silver items.  You can find it at any supermarket (in the cleaning supplies section), and it comes in a smallish round container, and a sponge applicator is included.  After the tarnish is removed, be sure to rinse off all the cream, then wash the pieces in warm water before using.  Do not - repeat - do not use any method that involves aluminum foil or a metal plate and washing soda  - it will likely remove the tarnish but will take lots of the silver with it - the chemical reaction it produces is very strong, thus, not kind to silver.  If you find that some tarnish can't be removed, even after vigorous rubbing, it could be that the piece or pieces have already lost some of their finish (usually happens when silver isn't maintained properly) and nothing is going to reverse that, except professional re-silvering, and you don't even want to go there because of the expense.
