Question:

Cleaning old bird cage?

I have a bird cage from back when I had my parakeet. It's a decent size, I don't remember the exact dimensions though.

Would it be suitable for a young lovebird? It came from petsmart for around $60 I think. I do know that a bigger cage would be better but I don't have the money to buy a whole new cage right now.

also, when my parakeet died I was pretty upset. I was really attached to him and I couldn't bring myself to clean the cage. I asked my mom to do it, and instead she just went and put it in the garage. This was about 2 years ago. (it wasn't very dirty though). I didn't know it hadn't been cleaned until a few minutes ago when i brought it inside.

Well I just rinsed it all out. Is there anything else I should wash it with? What about rust, theres only a tiny bit on the floor grate? What about the food dish and water bottle? Theres an almost new cuttle bone in there, should I throw it out or will it be safe for the new bird? (I'm probably going to throw out the toys because they had rubber pieces and are all cracked and old)

  1. You need to use a bleach and water solution and clean the cage with that to make it you just add a small amount of bleach to water and rub that all over the cage- it will kill germs that your parakeet might have left behind. Next rinse the cage with hot water and dry it off. For the rust, im not sure what you do with that , i guess just try to scrub it off. Throw away the cuttlebone if its been sitting around for more than a month in the garage.

  2. You should defiantly throw away the cuttle bone. The bird may have died from a disease or something and it could be on the cuttle bone, which could spread to your new lovebird. About the cups for food and water, it really won't matter for the food as long as it's clean, and doesn't have any cracks (so the food doesn't spill). As for the water bottle, it should be changed unless it's still in good condition, and doesn't have a crack either and yes the toys should defiantly go into the trash =) You should buy Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. Those are best to clean cages with. That way you don't have to wash the cage every time. You can just clean it. Very easy. Otherwise all you need is, new toys, food, water, and a new cuttle bone and your good to go. Good Luck with your new lovebird and sorry to hear about your parakeet.

  3. okay first off clorox is not bird or animal safe . get a product called p**p off and clean the cage with .make sure you use a scrub brush with the p**p off to remove all the debris off the cage . good luck with your new bird and sorry about your old one .
