Cleaning terracotta casserole dish

Question

I cranked up the oven too much on my romertopf terracotta dish and it is blackened on the outside now (outside is unglazed). I can't get it clean. Does anyone know how please?? Thanks!

I don't know how to clean it but was told once that unglazed teracotta is toxic.  Please check this out somewhere.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
