Cleaning violin strings?

i just asked about if i can clean violin strings with nail polish remover and i found out i probably shouldn't. :[ but i found out it's okay to use a damp cloth. is a damp paper towel okay?

  1. A damp cloth with alcohol but be sure the alcohol doesn't get on the violin, here is a good website on cleaning and it gives some tips on storing.


  2. no, it can leave deposits of paper towel on the strings and ruin them and the bow.

  3. Damp with what?  water?  Water and the goo associated with rosin will not mix.  Rubbing alcohol is the only cheap way to go.  Or Fiddlebrite.  

    Not water.

  4. use a soft damp towel. some violin shops sell special ones. I usually used anything soft that won't leave behind fuzz or anything  ;-)
