Clear Attempt succeeds in the Grade 3 Poker Stakes with rider Jose Lezcano on his back
The Kentucky bred, Clear Attempt, put in all the effort he could and it resulted in a victory in the Grade 3 Poker Stakes at Belmont Park on 4th July, 2012.
The four-year-old’s victory really was an Independence Day present for trainer Bill Mott, as the runner made the most of what he had.
Paired with rider, Jose Lezcano, the runner landed a 1 ¾ length victory over race favourite, Compliance Officer, whereas Yield Bogey finished in third place, half-length behind the runner-up.
Folaed by mare Silent Sighs, the colt completed the 1 mile track in 1 minute and 34.01 seconds.
The jockey’s strategy was to keep the son of A.P. Indy behind the front-runner, and take the lead when a gap opened up.
This strategy worked wonders as, Yield Bogey, led while Clear Attempt and Compliance Officer followed in pursuit. Yield Bogey maintained his lead for six furlongs that he completed in 1 minute and 11.12 seconds, but lost it as soon as other two picked up
pace.
The jockey reflected on the race tactics and stated:
"When the favorite moved outside, I moved with him and I kept waiting until the quarter pole to really ask," Lezcano added: "When I asked him, he gave me a good kick and finished good."
The Martin J. Wygod and Pam Wygod owned runner delivered a magnificent performance, safely tucked the victory under his belt and walked out a winner with $90,000 in his bag.
The runner, who joined the older division of runners not that long ago delivered well. He was teamed up with rider, Junior Alvarado, and competed over the distance of 1 1/8 miles in the Bel Allowance Optional Claimer, which took place at Belmont Park on
18th May, 2012.
It was a good effort on his part since he finished second to Chad Brown’s charge, Hyper.
Leanna Willaford, assistant to trainer Bill Mott told spoke well of Clear Attempt and stated:
"Bill just takes his time (but) we've always liked this horse. He's been one we aspired to win a stakes with."
