Clear off pesky cats!?

Would it be possible (legal) to smear vandal grease on the top of my fence to stop the neighbours cats coming in to my garden? If not, what would be the best way to chase them off?

  1. I used vasaline to keep squirrels from climbing the poles of my bird feeder with success, so I guess greasing your fence could work to keep cats off it.

Pet stores have a variety of products (sprays and such) meant to keep pets out of places they aren't welcome.

If they are coming in your garden when you are home a water gun is an effective cat chaser.

  2. An ultrasonic cat deterrent would probably work best, and they're relatively inexpensive.  Some just emit a noise that scares off cats whilst others also spray water.

I've no idea whether vandal grease would be toxic to cats or not, but it won't be weatherproof against rain.

  3. Is the cat digging up your garden and stuff? Then tell your neighbor to control their cat and keep it out of your yard because it's ruining your garden (or whatever else) and that if it doesn't stop coming in your yard, you will call animal control. If they didn't do anything about it after a week, call animal control to have the cat removed. Since the cat is a nuisance and it's destroying property, they will remove the cat. Best of luck :)

The water thing would be a good idea too, aim it for the top of your fence to keep it off, or other entrances he uses.

  4. It sounds kind of mean, but spray them with a water bottle  (even a sprinkler)  every time you see them. I used this method with keeping cats out of my bedroom when I was living at my fiancees parents house since I was allergic. You could also get a dog... or even ask your neighbors to keep them inside.

As for smearing grease on your fence? A cat could probably still manage that while getting dirty at the same time... and your neighbors might not be fond of that.
