Well I'm getting cavities filled and I really want to know how you would go about getting one of these. How do you and does it cost alot of money? I'm very self concious about having silver fillings all in my mouth and I don't want them...

  1. Dr. G, if most dentists are moving away from doing amalgam fillings, are you telling your patients that white fillings last 5-7 years usually, while amalgam fillings last upwards of 20 years?

And are you telling your patients that those white fillings wear down much faster than the much stronger amalgam fillings?

And and are you telling them that when those composite fillings leak, and they will, that the tooth underneath the filling will be mush, whereas with an amalgam filling the filling may discolor the inside of the tooth black a little, but when removed after 20 years, most of the tooth is solid as a rock?  Endodontists love composite fillings as they often lead directly to the tooth needing a root canal.

And white fillings are more expensive than amalgam fillings.

  2. You just need to tell your dentist that you want the tooth colored fillings and not the amalgam (silver fillings).  Most dentists are moving towards not even doing amalgams anymore, so that shouldn't be a problem.  As for how much it will cost, that depends on your insurance and the dentist you see.  Some insurance companies only cover the amount that an amalgam would cost, and you pay the difference.  In any case, your insurance will likely cover part and you will likely have to pay some out of your pocket.  Your dentist should be able to give you an estimate before any work is done.

As for replacing your existing silver fillings, I definitely would fill the cavities first.

  3. It does cost a bit more but only get them on your front teeth, I find silver usually doesn't show at all if they're in the back and they hold better.
