Question:

Clearing flies out of a backyard?

My parent's house has a major fly problem in the backyard. There have always been hundreds buzzing around back there since I was a little kid.

How do you get them to go away? I know they had a bug zapper at one point, but that only worked at night.

Any tips? Thanks!

  1. If there are flies, there must be a food and breeding source. If they have a compost heap, make sure it is covered with a layer of soil. If you have animals, make sure the area is kept clean and moist food is not left out for long. Flies will even breed in moist grass clippings. You need to check the area to find the source of the flies as they dont usually stay where there is no food.

  2. yes what the above answer-er  says is quite correct there must be sources of food.in the yard or nearby.Suggest,--A  thorough garden clean out should help  greatly.~(just have only trim grass.)

Also if you can get a very safe fly spray ~it may help?

    cheers.

this may take some time I  think--

(Oh by the way smelly dust bins/thrash bins need spraying &/or removing.)too.

  3. You need to find out what is attracting the flies. Is it someones trash nearby or someone dumping something in the soil or certain fruit or something?  You need to find the source and get rid of it. I don't know what kind of grounds your's parents house is on.  Perhaps it is sewage problem or certain fruit trees or stray animals passing thru leaving little presents for the flies hiding in the grass?   Ah also maybe someone has compost bin or uncovered fertilizer nearby?

You have to study the area and see if you can find the source before you can get a final solution but in the meantime aside from the zappers, they do have yard sprays to clear the area temporarily that you can purchase at Home Depot or garden centers in most department stores and maybe even hardware, should you need as a last resort before a family gathering or something but take care to follow instructions.

I hate those fly paper things because I'm the sort to always walk my face or hair smack right into them yucky glue trap thingys but sometimes certain times in the summer they do help catch alot of the flies which helps contol a bit when used at least for a few days before scheduled barbecues during some of the big city's worst summer daze.
