Question:

Clearing history in OS X - corporate computer?

I have to turn in an old computer to my office and pick up a new one. There is a snoopy IT guy who will likely scour it but it has been used for several things I don't want him to know about (e.g. previous usage of a competitor's trial software... a lot of time spent at that competitor's website, email records of them trying to recruit me, files with names like "contract details" etc. that I've opened). I keep finding log lists in OS X of files I've opened, sites I've visited, programs I've used, file names I've changed etc. Is there a way I can clear all record of where I've gone/what I've done without doing a clean OS install (I don't have discs and there are a lot of files/apps I need to keep loaded on the system). Basically I want to be able to look through my apps and docs folders, leave what I want in them and know there are no behind-the-scenes records of what used to be there.

I'm also turning in a Time Capsule. After deselecting a folder from backups in time machine prefs, will all previous backups of that folder in Time Capsule be erased? Also will the AirPort base station within log sites I've visited and IP addresses?

  1. Make a new username and delete your old one.. Simple as that.

  2. You can't edit the logs.

Just create a new user account and delete the old one... If you want to transfer docs from the old account to the new one, I suggest to transfer only the documents. All the data associated with an account is located in the folder /Users/theuserrname/Library. Just delete everything in that folder ( without deleting the folder itself ) and you should be OK.

For the backups, even if you de-select the folder in the Preferences, the old backups are still going to be accessible. I suggest you delete everything on the backup drive or yould delete the content of the /Users/username/Library/ of every backup folder on the backup drive.. wich could take a verrrrry long time, and I would adise against that 'cause it could s***w up your entire bakcup... just erase the whole d**n thing ;-)

  3. airport wont but timecapsule will keep them id say go ahead and erase it.
