I have just received 6 clematis, and I thought I would be able to plant them straightaway, however the leaflet with them suggests I plant them in individual pots and over winter them. Question is how do I do that. thanks

  1. i really do not think that is necessary they want you to put them in pots a put them outside all winter than in the spring plant them in the ground

  2. The plants in question are probably "Plugs"-baby plants

newly grown and only a few inches tall.Use a yogurt pot or a cup from a drinks dispenser, punch few holes in the base for drainage.

Place a little clean gravel or pebbles in the pot for stability and fill with potting compost.Use a pencil to make an hole to receive the clematis, plant quite firmly, keep the soil moist and stand the containers on a warm light inside windowsill.

Let them grow on 'til spring,a small cane may be required for support.Remember to move the clematis from the sill before closing the drapes on cold nights.

In the spring, plant them in the soil some two inches below ground level, this will safeguard against clematis wilt.

After planting, surround with crushed eggshells, gravel etc;with a few slug pellets.
