  1. Do the roots receive enough shade? The top part does need sun but the roots need the protection of the shade.

  2. I have had this same problem and don't have a good answer.  How old is your vine?  It usually takes from 3 to 5 years for a Clematis vine to really adjust to a new location.  Mine is about 4 years old and really was very beautiful this year but still had one stem that died.  I have heard that the roots need to be kept cool.  Maybe it is getting too much hot sun on the ground around it.

  3. This is just a guess, but are you trimming the clematis?  I have a purple clematis (jackmani(sic) - a deciduous variety) and I've noticed that if I do not trim it in the fall, the next spring sections of the last new growth will bud, but then dies off once the spring growth starts.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Actually, Clematis is grouped into 3 different subgroups all involving the way they are pruned. Not all Clematis get pruned down to the ground. Some bloom on last years growth. You have to find out which one yours is before you prune it.

  5. The majority of clematis should be cut to the ground in the fall.  You will then have growth all the way from the root up.
