The Schalke chairman has claimed that his side is under no pressure going into the next season and is aiming for a top four finish.
Die Knappen finished third in their previous Bundesliga outing behind the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. They qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stages with the third place finish and are aiming for the
same in the upcoming season.
Tonnies claimed that Schalke just want to play good attacking football in the next season also and are not aiming big despite a positive campaign last term. He insisted that there no pressure whatsoever on the team and the players
are determined to perform well at the highest level.
The chief stressed that putting pressure on the team to win the league has not helped the side in the past and the club will not repeat that mistake again. He is confident that the team will exceed all expectations and perform
well in the next year to end on a successful note.
“We just want to play good and successful football and start off with the aim of qualifying for the Champions League again. I have seen quite clearly in the past how this pressure to finally win the league title has not helped
us in the past,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The chairman admitted that Schalke will surely try for the honour but insists that the side needs some time to reach the top. He is targeting a league triumph in the near future and admits that the club is on the right path.
“Of course we will give it a go and we do want to get to the very top eventually, but that is something which will just evolve by itself. If we play good football and are then better than the rest, at some point we will win the
league,” he concluded.
