Clement Lefert, Eric Shanteau and Markus Rogan win Men’s qualifying rounds - Speedo Grand Challenge
Clement Lefert, Eric Shanteau and Markus Rogan excelled their performances in the qualifying rounds of the Men’s events on day one of the 2011 Speedo Grand Challenge at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Centre.
The session ended after the qualifying rounds of the 100m breast-stroke, 200m freestyle, 200m Individual Medley (IM) and the 1500m freestyle in the Men’s group.
The session initiated with the preliminary rounds of the 200m freestyle, where Trojan-CA’s Clement Lefert dominated the event by qualifying as the fastest swimmer into the finals. The 23-year-old Lefert occupied the fastest qualification spot, by clocking
a time of 1:49.95 minutes. He was 0.42 seconds away from his team-member, Dominik Meichtry, who entered the finals as the second fastest swimmer, with timing of 1:50.37 minutes. Their team-member, 24-year-old Stefan de Die, followed them on the finishing wall
as the third fastest swimmer in a time of 1:50.77 minutes.
In the 100m breast-stroke, UN-ST’s Eric Shanteau demonstrated his gruelling skills by claiming the fastest qualification spot in 1:01.83 minutes. The 27-year-old Shanteau’s unmatchable swim placed him almost 1.5 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Trojan-CA’s
Andrew Bree. Bree materialised as the second fastest swimmer into the finals, by posting a time of 1:03.12 minutes. They were followed by California Aquatics-PC’s Damir Dugonjic, who finished his swim in the third fastest time of 1:03.26 minutes. Damir out-touched
his closest competitor, Mike Alexandrov, who qualified as the fourth fastest in 1:03.27 minutes.
The third event of the session was the 200m IM, where Trojan-CA’s Markus Rogan overwhelmed his fellow swimmers and occupied the fastest qualification spot, producing a time of 2:04.22 minutes. The 29-year-old Rogan was almost two seconds away from his closest
rival, Martin Liivamagi, who completed his swim in the second fastest place in a time of 2:06.11 minutes. They were followed by UN-CA’s Matt Thompson, who settled as the third fastest swimmer, posting a time of 2:06.53 minutes.
The last event of the session was the 1500m freestyle heats, where 18-year-old Eric Hedlin, ruled the event with a stunning time of 15:39.92 minutes. He was followed by Mads Glaesner of Trojan-CA and Chad La Tourette of UN-CA, who completed their swims as
the second and third fastest swimmers, with timings of 15:41.40 and 15:48.66 minutes, respectively.
The finals of the same events will take place in the evening session, where these swimmers will face each other once again to claim the titles of their respective events. In addition, the winners will be awarded awards and accolades for their undisputed
swims after the finals.
