Clement Reix and Erik Chvojka move into the second round – Challenger of Granby 2011 CH
Clement Reix of France stood victorious against the lucky loser from the United States, Peter Aarts, in the opening round of the National Bank’s Challenger of Granby, being played at Granby, Canada, on Tuesday.
The Frenchman had no trouble in disposing of Aarts in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, in just one hour and eight minutes of play to qualify for the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
The matchup appeared pretty one-sided, with French domination evidently seen throughout. The American was led down by his error-ridden game, as he coughed number unforced errors in the contest, including five expensive double faults as well in the opening set alone. Reix’s ordinary serve of 55 per cent earned him 16 out of 20 total serve points in the opener and he fully capitalized upon his opponent’s mistakes to nail two timely serve breaks to wrap up the first set at 6-3.
A series of errors was witnessed from the French in the next set, as he spilled out seven double faults but he compensated for it very well by bagging 16 out of 18 first serve points. Aarts failed to register a single serve break in the entire contest, while Reix cracked in second break point of the to close out his straight sets victory at 6-3.
Reix will face off against the fourth seed Karol Beck of Slovakia, in the second round of the tournament for a place in the quarter-finals. Beck defeated Gong Maoxin of China in straight sets 6-3, 6-0, in the first round encounter.
Other than Reix, the local boy, Erick Chvojka, also won his opening round matchup against his fellow compatriot, Filip Peliwo, in the all-Canadian affair which took place on Tuesday afternoon as well.
Chvojka took barely one hour to annihilate his opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 and booked a place in the second round of the tournament. The Canadian absolutely dominated the entire matchup and didn’t give away a single chance to Peliwo to bounce back in the competition.
The 24-year-old had a ballistic start to the opening set and reeled off all the 16 first serve points he played, along with two pinching serve breaks to wrap up the opener at 6-1. His dominance continued with full flow in the second set as well and Chvojka nailed three more serve breaks to conclude victory on the most assertive note.
Chvojka will face either the fifth seed Tatsuma Ito of Japan or the Australian competitor, Greg Jones, in the second round draws for a place in the last eight.
