Clemente Award winner David Ortiz looking to stay with Boston Red Sox – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has backed off his statement, which he made a month earlier to a media organisation that he wanted to play for the New York Yankees.
Ortiz, who was given the prestigious Roberto Clemente award on Thursday just before the Game 2 of the World Series between the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals, has made it clear to the media that he had never made such an ambition.
“I never said I would sign with the Yankees. No, no, no,’’ he said. “They asked me if I would play with the Yankees. I said I would think about it.”
All these speculations may have come into light because of the pending free agent status of the David Ortiz, but the gossip may have forgotten the 10 days that Red Sox will have after the end of the World Series to finalise the matter. Ortiz is under the
opinion that the Red Sox may acquire him for two years with an annual value of $12.5-million, which he had already received from the club in this year.
“Of course I would like to come back,’’ Ortiz said. “We have a lot of things going on right now, and once they go through this stuff, like the general manager and the manager, they’ll start talking to the players.’’
Replying to a question about the controversy that the Red Sox roster was found drinking in the clubhouse during the month of the September, in which the club lost 20 outings of 28, Ortiz denied any such information.
Ortiz was presented with the most prestigious award, which is given every year to the player ‘who best represent the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field’. As Ortiz had made incomparable efforts to help the unprivileged children
in need heart surgery, he was honoured with the award.
The baseball commissioner Bud Selig, who presented the award, stated that Ortiz had made remarkable contributions for the children of both the United States and the Dominican Republic. The left-hander is a native of the Dominican Republic and has been a
part the Major League Baseball since 2003.
