Clemson wins the title at the 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate
Clemson team won the title of the Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the amazing site of the Palmetto Golf Club.
The par-70, three-round tournament came to an end. The Clemson University team achieved the glory by scoring an 854 on the 6,617 yards golf course and played tremendously well.
The runner-up, Virginia team, was only one stroke behind the leading team and recorded an 855 in the three rounds.
“We had a real good back nine. We were struggling early, but to our guys’ credit, we played the back nine good,” Larry Penley said.
He added, “Everyone was at least 2-under. I think we wound up shooting 8- or 9-under on the back (as a team)”.
The South Carolina finished on the third position, by carding an 863 score on the leaderboard. They were nine strokes behind the winner and eight strokes behind the runner-up, respectively.
Virginia's Ben Kohles is the winner of the individual medallist honours. He displayed an amazing performance throughout the event and achieved the honour for the third time in his career.
He scored a 208 and defeated the Clemson's Crawford Reeves by a one-stroke lead, who scored 209.
“It’s disappointing to miss by one shot,” Kohles said. “You think of four scores over three days and it all comes down to one shot. I’m sure everyone can say there was one decision that could have saved a shot, but that’s golf”.
Ben Rusch of Virginia was on the third individual position, scoring a 212 in total. A tough battle was seen among these three players.
However, the runner-up team’s member, Kohles, impressed the officials and became the proud medal winner of the 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on March 6, at the Palmetto Golf Club, Aiken in SC.
Liberty University finished on fourth and East Carolina University was on the fifth. Both these teams played well on the course and scored 867 and 868, respectively.
This was the first time for the Clemson University to win a title. The team had tried hard in the past but never finished the tournament by recording a win.
The one-stroke lead benefitted them over Virginia’s team.
All the teams will be heading to play the Magnolia Invitational at the Orangeburg Country Club in Orangeburg, S.C. from March 12 to 13.
