Cleotis Pendarvis takes on career’s toughest opponent Robert Frankel in a title bout - Boxing News
Cleotis Pendarvis, the current World Boxing Foundation Intercontinental and United States welterweight champion, will take on the toughest opponent of his career in the form of Robert Frankel, the current WBC United States (USNBC) light welterweight champion,
in a 12-round bout which will be televised live on May 25, 2012.
The bout will not only have Robert’s title on the line but will also have the vacant USBA light welterweight title up for grabs. The duo will headline the Friday night pay-per-view which is being promoted jointly by Steve Bash of Bash Boxing and Kahren Harutyunyan
of Art of Boxing Promotions.
The night will be co-headlined by the non-title six-round bout between Tyrell Hendrix and Loren Myers. The ring for the showdown will be set up at Warner Center Marriott situated in Woodland Hills, California, United States.
Pendarvis, 25, has been in a total 19 bouts and boasts 14 wins. The young lad has nailed just five opponents by knockout and is seriously outclassed and somewhat unmatched in his upcoming contest.
In his short career, the southpaw Pendarvis, also known as the ‘Mookie’, has collected three losses whereas his Friday night opponent is not only heavily experienced but also possesses a pretty impressive win ratio.
Robert, 31, has been in a total 42 bouts and boasts 30 wins. He has nailed just six men by knockout and has collected 11 losses. Frankel, also known as the ‘Red Hot’, is coming from an impressive win over Raul Carrillo, a bout in which he grabbed the vacant
WBC United States (USNBC) light welterweight title.
In addition, he is on a two-bout win streak and grabbed his last loss from the fists of quite a respectable name John Molina. Pendarvis, on the other hand, is on a four-bout win streak since his last loss to Terrance Cauthen.
The odds between both pugilists are 50-50. The only facet that will make a difference is the initial rounds because if Robert grabs an upper hand with powerful jabs he might go on to win the bout but at the same time if Pendarvis does vice versa, he might
come out of the ring with two more titles round his waist.
During a recent detailed media interaction, Pendarvis thanked his team mates and specially Robert for taking up the challenge and stated, “Even if you can’t see this fight, you’re gonna hear about what I can do. I want to thank God, and my team: Steve Bash,
and my managers and promoters: Warren Wilkerson and Herb Hudson. I also want to thank Frankel for taking the fight. He showed what kind of a man he is, and may the best man win.”
The bout will be worth watching since both men are equal as far as the technicalities are concerned, only experience will have the decisive role.
