Clermont Auvergne trounce Aironi by 54-3 in Heineken Cup Pool 4 clash - Rugby News
Clermont Auvergne stunned Aironi by a mighty difference of 54-3 in their second match of the ongoing Heineken Cup 2011-12 on Friday, November 18, at Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin. It was a brilliant comeback by Clermont after sustaining an early defeat
in the tournament at the hands of Ulster last week. They looked a totally different side against Aironi as they dominated the field from the start. They scored eight tries in the match to record a convincing victory. Morgan Parra and Brock James hailed the
winning side with three conversion goals each.
It was a must win game for Clermont to remain in the competition, which they played to their best and kept their hopes alive for the next stages of the event. Lee Byrne’s try in the 10th minute of the match proved first drop of rain for the ultimate
victorious side as the flood gate of points was opened for them later on. The repeated and desperate attacks of Clermont’s players froze Aironi during the entire game.
They led the equation by 21-3 at the end of first half with three tries. Gerhard Vosloo and Brock James were the other scorers for Clermont. Luciano Orquera, on the other hand was the sole contributor for Aironi, who kicked the only three pointer for his
team in the 13th minute.
Rampant Clermont continued their good work even in the second half and expanded their lead to 54-3 as the final whistle was blown by the referee. Five more tries in the second part of the game won them a bonus point.
