Cleveland Browns' coach Pat Shurmur says Colt McCoy starter for Chicago Bears' tie - NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ coach Pat Shurmur has confirmed participation of all quarterbacks in the game against the Chicago Bears but offence leader Brandon Weeden who apparently in the wake of failing to throw a touchdown pass in all three preseason games he started
for the team has been rested.
With Brandon out, the coach said that Colt McCoy will be given the starting role but added that Seneca Wallace and Thad Lewis will also play. He did not elaborate if these two quarterbacks will be tried out on the starting line.
It is probably the only chance for McCoy to prove his credentials as a leader, which he could not do in 13 starts last season. The upcoming opportunity, however, will address his complaint that he was completely ignored in the so-called QBs competition of
the team that the coach boasted to have run through training camp this month.
Pat has not clarified how much playing time he is going to give to McCoy but the existing scenario indicates that the incumbent is most likely to be landed half of the game time. Wallace and Lewis can share one each from rest of the two quarters.
Since being pushed behind Brandon, McCoy is in contest with Seneca and to an extent with Lewis for the backup position. If he is able to display a better form in the Bears' game he can also win time on the starting line.
The chances of McCoy taking the leading role are even greater, given Brandon is struggling to overcome his problems. He is likely to continue working on those mistakes on his own for some time in the future given he has been receiving little help from coaches
in the process of their rectification.
It is now a make or break scenario for McCoy. His participation in the Bears’ game also provides an opportunity to the coach to assess McCoy’s game level at present in comparison with last season to gauge any improvement, which will ultimately pave the way
for Browns to decide the QB’s future with or without them.
