Cleveland Browns’ Brandon Weeden ready to challenge Colt McCoy,
Seneca Wallace for No. 1 spot-NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback, Brandon Weeden, has accepted the challenge of competing for the starting role with other two quarterbacks and has spoken of his preparedness for it.
Some reports had earlier indicated that Weeden would be given the starting position straight away. But since the denial of weighing such an option by coach, Pat Shurmur, the No. 1 spot remains open for all three QBs.
Weeden said he is ready to compete for the role with Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace when the team starts its regular season campaign in September.
He said:
"Absolutely, I think we're just going to compete. Nothing will change. I know Colt (is) a good guy. I know Seneca is a good guy. I met Seneca, so I'm looking forward to just being part of the other quarterbacks."
His remarks have come in the perspective of the coach’s comments that the team does not give anything to anyone, leaving the space open to fight for the starting role. According to the coach, Weeden will have to prove his credentials to become the starter.
Nothing has been said by other two quarterbacks in response to the coach’s statement. But apparently all seems well set forth for them to work hard and win the position.
Browns most likely are going to start with McCoy once again, and with the coach’s invitation for competition he may well be on the course to lose it to Weeden.
Weeden was rated third best quarterback out of the college league in the 2012 NFL draft, held from April 26 to 28. He has a word of endorsement from Indianapolis Colts’ owner, Jim Irsay, who referred to the player as a hidden talent.
So it is most likely that Weeden will pose a real challenge to McCoy, who has not been successful during his previous stints on the starting line.
McCoy has started for Browns in 21 games. He was on the starting line for almost the entire 2011 regular season except for the last three games, which he missed due to concussion. His place was filled by Wallace then.
Overall, Wallace has 21 starts on his resume and remains to be a contender with same credentials for the starting role as the other two players.
