Cleveland Browns GM Tom Heckert backs QB Colt McCoy behind Brandon Weeden – NFL News
Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Colt McCoy has finally found himself in a stable situation as far as his prospects with the Browns are concerned, and his case is now further helped by general manager Tom Heckert’s reported backing of the QB for a role
behind offence leader Brandon Weeden.
This may also clear the air of uncertainty including lingering trade threat over Colt’s head since the team selected rookie QB Brandon Weeden off this year’s draft and later named him as the offence leader for this season.
Until last week Colt was very much on the course for a trade off to another side in the league, as had been indicated by all top officials of the team all along the offseason and preseason phases.
Now since release of Seneca Wallace, Colt appears set to perform into a backup role behind rookie Weeden, who has started all but one game of the preseason and apart from exposing himself to some problems, has shown some promise.
Heckert, who had earlier hinted at trading Colt, has now reportedly backed him for the backup position, leaving the deal option out of consideration, for the time being at least.
Colt was given an opportunity on the startling line in last game of the preseason, along with Seneca Wallace and Thad Lewis. While he failed himself again as a leader, he remained lucky that the other two QBs showed even more miserable form. This cleared
the way for him to extend his stay in Cleveland.
Soon after coming out of the game, Colt boasted confidence and claim for the backup role, which at the end paid him off in form of winning the spot.
He earlier had complained about the team’s choice of leaving him out of the so-called quarterbacks’ competition, which according to him existed only in talks but never took place on the field. Some commentators see it to be a factor behind the team’s decision
of giving the incumbent another opportunity.
Also, the team may be did not want to lose a QB who knows the system and has played into it for a few seasons, and in case Weeden is injured or fails himself in the regular season, the Browns can rely on McCoy as a makeshift arrangement.
