Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden faces rookie’s issues amid little help from coaches – NFL News
The Cleveland Browns must think soon about providing some help to rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden who still seems struggling with familiar problems of a player who is into first year of the professional league career, well reflective in his latest performance
in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.
Some of the issues confronting the young QB – all of them are problems of a rookie player – are: the player holds football too low before making throws and throws them at the same speed.
A number of game experts have drawn attention of Browns' coaches to work this out with the player given it creates troubles for the QB as far as protection around him is concerned.
Also, Brandon is measured throwing all throws at the same – fast – speed, which leaves little for the players at receiving end to calculate their velocity and power. He is not that successful in producing more flexibility or stability in his throws. He is
too straight and predictable. Also, timing is a matter of concern here.
His performance against the Eagles looked to be lower than the form he had produced a game earlier. He could manage to connect to only five out total 16 throws and fumbled twice.
Although his performance is in no way a good showing, this has not worried the game analysts at all. They believe the QB’s problems are those that all rookies go through during their first pro year but they do note with concern that the player has been left
to work on them on his own.
It is rather strange that in spite of all boasting from Browns coaches, Brandon has been receiving little help for rectifying his mistakes. He more or less has shown to be consistent in committing those mistakes – almost in all games he has played so far
the issues are same – but neither the offence coach nor the head coach has taken a serious note of them or is willing to work them out once and for all.
Earlier, Browns second-year coach Pat Shurmur had shown faith into the rookie’s abilities and hoped the player would bounce back strongly after initial failure, but he has not so far specifically mentioned the player's mistakes or taken any practical steps
to sort them out.
It is hoped that the QB is able to overcome them soon, but amid no chance of help from anyone from the coaching department it will be difficult for him to handle the situation on his own.
