Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden faces tough road ahead - NFL News
Quarterback Brandon Weeden, as expected, was given the ball first to start the preseason campaign for Cleveland Browns with the opener against the Detroit Lions on Friday and the rookie's performance proved he still has a long way to go as far as gaining
in maturity of skills is concerned.
Coach Pat Shurmur named the rookie as the new offence leader last week and almost all onlookers and commentators agree the QB during his first appearance had ‘rookie’ written all over his profile.
He has been given preference over incumbent Colt McCoy, who said to be disappointed over the decision because, as he claimed, it had come without him getting an opportunity to take snaps with starters' group in the so-called competition, which the team boasted
to have staged.
While the rookie is seen falling far below the expectations during his first entry on the field, a real test is awaiting him at the regular season with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles on 9th of next month. He might not feel comfortable
in the game given Eagles’ defence is deeper than probably any other team in the National Football League (NFL).
No one from Browns, the head coach particularly, offered any postgame comments about Brandon’s performance, but it does not prevent the rookie from continuing the leadership role. Weeden was considered for the starting role straightaway, and now he has to
prove the team’s decision was worthy.
As a matter of fact, Weeden’s arrival in the town has since threatened job of the incumbent McCoy, and with him on the backup position stakes are higher for the rookie and coach Shurmur. Any failing from him on the starting line will certainly disappoint
them and possibly bring criticism over the decision from all corners in the league.
Meanwhile, Browns are yet indecisive about Colt McCoy’s future, and the player himself is also on a wait-and-see position. Although general manager Tom Heckert and head coach had talked about the possibility of a trade arrangement for the player during the
time leading up to preseason, both officials have remained tight-lipped over the prospective move so far.
