Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden insists deal guarantee a fair demand – NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden has spoken about his compelling deal matter for the first time and insisted his demand from the team to guarantee all four years on the prospective contract is fair.
He was speaking at the local charity golf tournament, which he played in support of a children charity organisation after he and his wife committed about $200,000 in donations to help the cause.
Brandon is the only notable player left in the National Football League (NFL) waiting his deal is done. All his counterparts including Indianapolis Colts’ QB Andrew Luck, Washington Redskins’ rookie QB Robert Griffin III, have been given contracts by their
teams, respectively.
The deal talks were hit by the differences emerged on the issue of guaranteeing his contract for the entire tenure of four years. The Browns are apparently not willing to do so; irrespective of the fact that none of their managers has spoken about the issue,
especially after it made the headlines recently.
The rookie QB on the other hand insists his demand is legitimate and it does not translate into asking too much out of the prospective contract from the team.
He said:
"What I'm asking for is not too much. I think it's fair. If they see me in their plans as the starting quarterback, it doesn't make sense why they wouldn't do it."
Weeden expects a four-year contract worth around $8.1 million, as per new slotting system for rookies’ salaries introduced by the NFL in the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
While it is not clear if the Browns are going to succumb to his demand of guaranteeing the entire contract tenure, his deal is expected to be around the corner.
The team has already confirmed signing of rookie running back Trent Richardson, who was also hit by the deal delay over differences on inclusion of offset language in his terms. The Browns at the end agreed not to include the language as per demand of the
player.
Weeden, who faces Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy in the starting QB competition at training camp, says he and his wife plan to live and develop their lives in Cleveland.
He said:
"This is an underrated town. My wife absolutely loves it, but then again, you might want to ask me that again in December. Nothing is ever really guaranteed, so I want to be smart about this. But when camp starts, I'll be there."
It is now left to signing of the player well in time to facilitate his arrival at the camp without any delay.
