Cleveland Browns QB Brandon Weeden’s success key to pro prospects as leader – NFL News
Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden must prove his credentials for a successful pro career this weekend to avoid meeting an end that more than a dozen quarterbacks have met at the Browns for over last decade.
Coach Pat Shurmur has let the rookie get away with repeated and avoidable mistakes first in training camp, then in preseason and now in the season opener, but how long he persists with the QB is unclear. The pressure from fans to replace Brandon with former
starter Colt McCoy is surmounting in the meantime.
It is encouraging for the team and particularly for the coach that Brandon recognises his mistakes, but how he is going to work out them is a question with no answer yet.
Apparently, Shurmur has boasted about the confidence level of the player and the fact that he is working to rectify his mistakes but the coach has not offered practical steps to help him improve.
He said:
"He won't lose his confidence. I think it's important we go back, just like we do each week, work on the fundamentals of playing the position and get ready to play the next team."
Brandon must realise he has to fix his problems on his own unless he gets an outside help. He otherwise will be wasting his talent and potential as much as about 16 quarterbacks have done in the last 13 years.
The Browns are probably the only team to have tried so many offence leaders. Almost every year they select a new quarterback and boast about his potential leadership skills before letting him bust at the end.
A similar situation was faced by Brandon’s predecessor and now backup quarterback Colt McCoy, who has become fans’ favourite once more as a result of lapses committed by Brandon.
It is pertinent to note here that the Browns have been sold to a new owner – Jimmy Haslam III – and the team might come out of the stagnation phase amid some rash changes at all departments to improve quality of the staff and players. In the meantime, prospects
of the players like Brandon do not appear to be very promising.
