Cleveland Browns QB Colt McCoy improves but still faces trade – NFL News
The Cleveland Browns see quarterback Colt McCoy is clearly a transformed and better player but this may not be enough for him to avoid prospects of being traded to another team in the National Football League (NFL) before the start of the regular season.
Browns’ president Mike Holmgren and coach Pat Shurmur have reiterated many times that anything can be expected happening between the offseason and start of the regular season. This includes the trading of Colt.
Now Holmgren has conceded that the quarterback has improved from the last year’s level and is having a great time at training camp. He said:
"I said 'boy, Colt's having a good day today. He had a good practice, he's had a good camp and he's looked good. I'm proud of the way he's handling it. I told Colt that the other day."
This does not deny the possibility of the trade of the QB, as the president added:
"We'll have to see how that goes coming down the stretch."
Also, a section of media has claimed the coach is determined to name rookie Brandon Weeden as their next starter by the end of training camp.
So irrespective of the trade question, Colt appears set to lose the starting job. No matter how hard he plays, the team is set to choose their new leader at the outset of the next season. This will leave McCoy for a backup role, with or without Browns.
Yet the coach even has admitted that Colt has stepped up level of his game, which leaves the rookie very much into the competition for the starting role.
Shurmur said:
"Colt's doing great. He's continuing to improve. I'm seeing him do things in this camp that he didn't do a year ago, and he's getting more comfortable within our system and he's coming to work every day and working hard. He's doing a good job."
The official offered the remarks after the team’s practice on Wednesday, another day of success for the quarterback. One plus that Colt can get out of his better run this season, even if he is not retained by the Browns, is that he can increase his chances
of playing at a better position i.e. No. 2 if not the starting line.
