Cleveland Browns QB Colt McCoy wins coach Pat Shurmur’s approval for starting role-NFL News
A day after Cleveland Browns’ president, Mike Holmgren, backed quarterback, Colt McCoy, for the starting position next season, coach, Pat Shurmur, has come up with approval of the player for the number one role.
McCoy has recently come under pressure regarding his form and performance, which in most times remained below the par.
The intensity of the pressure was further increased following the team’s attempt to explore an opportunity for signing the second best draft prize and came on the negotiation table for a deal with the St. Louis Rams, who had a second overall draft pick.
McCoy’s future at Cleveland looked threatened as result of the talk. He faced the possibility of either release from the team or being left to the backup position.
To the player’s relief, the negotiations ended without a breakthrough as Rams opted to reach a deal with the Washington Redskins.
With that opportunity gone, Browns’ management has quickly come into the favour of their prevalent quarterback situation.
Holmgren, a day earlier, said that he was content with McCoy to be their quarterback number one next season and backed the player for an improvement in his form.
Now, the head coach has spoken words of encouragement for the youngster and said they remain committed to him for the starting position.
Shurmur said:
"At this point, he's our quarterback. We're looking forward to him being our guy and I'm looking forward to seeing him improve. We believe he has a chance to be a fine player in this league."
So, with the statement from the coach, McCoy has won support from all top three bosses, coach, president and general manager.
It should come as good news for the player, who has been through a rather difficult situation after suffering a head injury in the closing part of the 2011-12 National Football League (NFL) season.
McCoy suffered concussion in the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers into week 14th of the league and is recovering and rehabilitating since then.
He unfortunately had a setback to his injury as Browns’ medical trainers allowed him return to the field and resume game without inspecting him for concussion on the sidelines.
The management later came to the realisation that the player’s injury was concussion and could not avoid an inquiry by the NFL and NFL Players Association (NFLPA).
McCoy, amid some recent confusion and uncertainty, is yet to report his full recovery and fitness.
