Cleveland Browns aim strategic use of $17.7 million cap surplus – NFL News
Cleveland Browns have so much space on the pay roster that they can safely hire as many as four players on a year deal each but the team is learnt to have decided against any spending unless and until a genuine need arises.
A section of media has reported that the team has a surplus amount of $17.7 million to their salary cap for this season and they are going to save it for the future, in case they are met with a setback regarding availability of any player
for any reason during the course of the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season.
If the team wants to bring in a player on $4 million a year deal, it will have $1.7 million left, after landing contracts to four players. The $4 million payout on a year deal is a reasonable sum to pay to an NFL player.
Browns do not think this way, though.
Some reports citing people closer to the team managers say the team has decided against committing any amount to free agency at the moment but can do so when they need it in the future.
Browns look to have a right balance at all positions in the squad and do not need a hiring move as such.
Recently, a number of media reports have linked the team to an interest in trade of their quarterback, Colt McCoy, but these reports are not confirmed by the team, or independently.
A day earlier, they denied being interested in Green Bay Packers’ veteran receiver, James Jones. Further, the team categorically rejected the reports of dealing for James with Packers in exchange for Colt.
So, even that possibility is over now. The talk around prospects of McCoy’s sending elsewhere emerged following the team’s backing of rookie QB, Brandon Weeden, for the starting role.
Browns’ president, Mike Holmgren, a couple of weeks earlier said that a trade deal for the incumbent QB can be a possibility. He did not mention anything that could indicate that the team’s choice of parting ways with the QB is final.
Overall, all seems quiet and calm at Browns as far as hiring-firing is concerned.
