Cleveland Browns back QB Colt McCoy for starting role in spite of replacement talk-NFL News
The Cleveland Browns, who until recently were exploring the opportunity of trading for the second seeded draft pick, Robert Griffin III, in exchange of few picks with the St. Louis Rams, have backed the return of quarterback, Colt McCoy, to the starting
position next season.
Following confirmation of losing Griffin’s signing opportunity, Browns’ president, Mike Holmgren and general manager, Tom Heckert, at a conference call with season-ticket holders, said they were content with McCoy at the No. 1 spot.
They said they would be looking to bring in some support behind the quarterback, instead of going for his replacement.
Heckert said:
"We do think Colt has a big ceiling. It's my job to get better players surrounding him. After the season, we said we have to protect him better. We have to be able to run the football, which we did at times last year. If you look at the games when we ran
well and protected well, Colt played very well."
Browns’ officials further said that they were happy over the current arrangement on the attack line and would refrain from making abrupt changes to any of the positions around it.
The latest development must be rather encouraging for the player, as lately his future at Browns was in a state of jeopardy.
McCoy left Browns during last few games of the past season after suffering a concussion as a result of a hit from Pittsburgh Steelers’ linebacker, James Harrison.
Since then, there is no regular update on his status of injury and recovery, either from the player or the management.
Browns were brought in the line of fire over their poor form, which has continued from many past seasons. In 2011-12 National Football League (NFL) season, they finished with another dismal record of 4-12.
Despite the insignificant performance, the managers are hopeful of turnaround next season and the efforts such as pursuing of Griffin’s signing was part of their rebuilding phase, which, more or less, is a matter of almost every year.
Some of their players are even frustrated with their so called rebuilding campaign going on and on for many seasons, but apparently lacked answer to their vows on the field.
Meanwhile, McCoy’ injury status is still not determined.
Interestingly, the player himself has kept mum over all the latest developments, including the reports of Browns seeking his replacement.
