Cleveland Browns baffled over snub of draft QB Griffin III bid by St. Louis Rams –NFL News
The Cleveland Browns’ offer to the St. Louis Rams for trade of the latter’s second overall draft pick in exchange of a number of draft picks was similar to the one the Washington Redskins made and the baffled Browns’ management is unable to understand why
its offer was not accepted.
It is likely that the team with the second overall pick will select Baylor College’s quarterback, Robert Griffin III (RGIII).
Brown’s president, Mike Holmgren, has come out with an explanation in response to some criticism that the franchise did not make a serious attempt to bring the draft player home.
Holmgren apparently lacked a justifiable answer as he maintained that it was Rams’ decision to accept the bid. Otherwise, he said, Browns' bid "was every bit the offer that was chosen."
He was talking to season-ticket holders of the team at a conference call, which was not attended by the coach, Pat Shurmur, and general manager, Tom Heckert, and media was not permitted to ask questions.
So everything seemed to be accepted and settled as said by the president. The official, however, denied the reports that Browns’ offer did not include the second round pick.
Irrespective of the controversy around the credibility of Browns’ attempt to hire RGIII, it is certain that the player is now not going to join Browns and Redskins might select him.
The move does not come as a good development for the team, who struggled to maintain the pace and form on the offensive line last season. Their attack, led by quarterback, Colt McCoy, remained short of making an impact on the field.
Even though McCoy has been backed by all the managers and the head coach, the management was interested to bring in someone of Griffin’s calibre for the starting role, possibly placing McCoy as his backup.
Colt McCoy is recovering from a concussion that he had suffered in the later period of 2011-12 National Football League (NFL) season.
There were some doubts earlier that he might not comeback since the team was weighing the other options but now his return is almost certain.
Now with the backing from the management and coach, it will be rather encouraging for McCoy to try to improve his form when he rejoins the squad in September.
Meanwhile, Browns have confirmed to have signed defensive end, Frostee Rucker, off the free agency market on a five-year $21 million deal. It includes $8 million guaranteed money.
General manager, Tom Heckert, said of the deal:
"Frostee is a player that we targeted in free agency, and we couldn't be happier that he chose to become a member of the Cleveland Browns.”
He added:
"We really like the veteran presence that he will give our young defensive line. He started last year for one of the top defences in the NFL, and we feel as though he can come in and have that same impact on our defence."
Browns finished last season at 4-12 and all their recent efforts are described to be focused on improvement in the performance. It will be seen in the next season if they are successful in achieving their goals.
