Cleveland Browns campaign for kicker Phil Dawson’s Pro Bowl pick – NFL News
The entire Cleveland Browns’ organisation agrees that kick returner Phil Dawson is a Pro Bowl selection and expressed a surprise and annoyance over his ignorance in a recently released balloting by the National Football League (NFL) without mention of the player in the list of top-notch place kickers.
Punter Reggie Hodges has gone so far that he has launched a Twitter campaign in support of Dawson, 37, who is the only fulltime kicker in the field without a miss.
Hodges says of the player:
"He's been doing it for 14 years and he's been doing it in the worst conditions. Browns Stadium is the toughest place in the NFL to kick -by far. It's tough for him to find the right spot to kick off of. And to be 21 of 21 with five over 50 (yards), five of five from 40 to 49, that's incredible.”
Coach Pat Shurmur has also come to his rescue, and said:
"He's been a Pro Bowl quality kicker for a very long time. I've got a great deal of respect for who he is and what he is as a player. I'm really glad he kicks for us.”
Dawson is probably only bright spot and veteran left in the side, who has consistently performed well into victory chances of the team. Otherwise, the side is studded with young stars, who have a long way to go in their careers. The team is rebuilding from scratch with as many as 15 rookies in the side this year.
He is also probably amongst the few players who are likely to be given a chance under reign of the new owner Jimmy Haslam when he formally accepts ownership rights of the team later this year or maybe next year. The Browns are sold in a billion dollar deal to Haslam and the deal is through to regulatory hurdles at present.
Just like a majority of past seasons, Dawson is having a perfect season this year. It is contrary to Browns’ overall performance. The team with only three wins out 11 games played are struggling to make an impact on the field.
